Nest Sleeve Shirt

Nature takes every opportunity to grow and thrive. It doesn't matter what we do, the flora and fauna will find a way to survive regardless of how bizarre the circumstances look to us.

One of Brad's work shirts spent several days on the clothes line. We had been getting daily rains and I just left it there, hoping to bring it in once it had dried.

When I went to get the shirt, it had a new occupant. A wren has built a nest in the shoulder hollow area of the shirt. I debated on leaving it on the line to see if she would hatch out young.

Common sense and practical need won out. I removed the yet unused nest and retrieve the shirt. It did make for a cute photo!

When I Out Stupid Myself

There are times when I am amazed at how dumb I can be. Not that I am  always dumb...I just do dumb stuff sometimes. The only time I go beyond "dumb" is when I make two mistakes back to back. Then I am just flat out STUPID.  I am happy to admit my mistake, wear my DUNCE hat and set in the corner. I'll set on the street corner if it would insure I don't make the same STUPID mistake AGAIN!

My last big mistake happened a few weeks ago. I'm still shaking my head over my total temporary loss of reason and intelligence. My synapses glitch was so big that I say I "out stupid myself" in comparison to any previous brainless event burned into my memory. So what did I do that was so stupid?

I pushed the wrong command button on my cell phone and...

I deleted hundreds of photos in my phone...without saving them to my PC first.

Oh yeah, I see you shaking your head. Have you goofed up and deleted important photos too? I don't feel quite so bad. In case you are shaking your head in disbelief of my stupidity, please just reach out and thump me on the head. I could use the painful reminder to THINK before pressing a button...ANY button on my phone.

Loosing all my precious photos is a big deal to me. Those pictures were mainly of our homestead, animals, events, and in general a huge slice of our life around here. I had videos of goat kids being born, working our new garden plot, wildlife, me hand milking the goats, etc. I also lost family and friend pics and videos of "Kodak" moments that were once in a life time.

I had intended to upload these pics to my PC and use most of it to post on this blog. I had MONTHS of cell phone pics for posts. My memory card had over 300 pictures just BEGGING for a story to be told...and I lost it all with just one push of a button.

Fortunately, I am not so stupid that I don't know what I did wrong. I most certainly know EXACTLY the point in time where I could have easily avoided this whole situation. Knowing what you did or where you went wrong is the first step to not repeating the error. So, if I knew then what I sorrowfully know now, here's what I'd do differently:

I would upload my phone pics EACH DAY to my PC. When I got sidetracked from blogging I also quit uploading pics from my phone. This is my back to back mistake. It wasn't intentional, I just got caught up in other things and neglected the pics, and thereby neglected the blog they were intended for.

Keep my spare micro SD card with me so I can pop/swap it and get a back up of at least some of my pics. If my card is corrupted or I repeat my past "Out Stupid Myself" mistake. I have a back up.

This whole experience has impacted me in a profound way. I lost pictures I cherished because I got distracted and lazy in saving them. I not only lost them, I also lost the ability to share them with others. That is the biggest loss of all. I am sorry, really, really sorry.

The best thing that can happen by me sharing my latest stint with STUPIDITY is that you learn from my mistake. Please, upload your phone pics to your PC or flash drive and get them out of your phone. Don't loose those precious memories you've suspended in digital time. You'll regret it, and I hear about it....

I'm gonna hunt you down and personally thump you on the head.

Emmy Lou AKA Caprine Queen of EVERYTHING!

Emmy Lou...ah the stories of that Queen of the Goat Kingdom. She never does ANYTHING without making a big fuss. If she isn't bawling LOUDLY for attention she is stomping, snorting or knocking stuff around in the goat yard until she gets what she wants.

I had no idea what a goat whipped servant I was until she came into my life. You can't feed her or milk her fast enough. When she is done with the food she is also done with milking. It doesn't matter if you aren't finished, she is finished. I have to tie and hobble her just to finish milking her.

The only thing that exceeds her attitude is her appetite. She sucks up grain like a shop vac! If I fed her as much as she'd like during milking she'd eat double or triple what she really needs.

As our top resident attention hog and caprine love sponge, Emmy Lou makes sure that she is the center of attention. She has the ability to rule over time and space around here.
Every encounter is a battle of wills of which she is usually the victor. Now that I know my place, I make it a point to keep her happy just so she doesn't beat up all the other goats in the yard! There are days I'd give her away and other days I just love her to pieces. She has the most people like personality of our herd. She loves everybody and is the first to greet you at the gate. I never have to catch her 'cause she is always in my pocket or rubbing on me to get scratched or petted. Even with her high and mighty attitude, she has a goofy adorable side too. Life here on the homestead wouldn't be the same without the daily antics of Emmy Lou.

Of the three pregnant does, Emmy had me the most frustrated at kidding time. I thought she'd NEVER deliver her kids. She just wasn't showing signs  like the other does did prior to birthing. Emmy's due date came and went so, I decided she might like time out of the kidding pen. She had been in the pen for over a week and her "goattitude" was at an all time high. She needed a break from the kidding pen...I needed a break from her constant bawling and pacing the fence. I took her out to our side yard to enjoy munching on some of her favorite weeds. She enjoyed the weeds and I enjoyed the peace and quiet as she stuffed herself with yard goodies.

When Emmy Lou did finally deliver her kids, she used her impeccable "center of attention" timing to have them...on Shabbat/Sabbath front of everyone who came to fellowship that day. We watched her give birth and marveled at the miracle of new life. A few of the folks there had never witnessed an animal giving birth so this was a rare treat them for them.

In true Emmy Lou "get'r done" style, she quickly delivered two health kids, a buck and  doe. We named the buck, Boaz (Hebrew for "strength/pillar") and the doe, Binyah (Hebrew for "foundation"). They are the next generation of our growing goat herd. Boaz looks like his daddy and Binyah is a mini me of Emmy Lou...right down to the attitude. That  little goat apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Now I have a second generation of goattitude. I can handle 'tude at a time. =D

Bella the Beautiful

When I last posted we had sold the twin goats, Monkey See and Monkey Do. Their momma, Bella had a very hard time with the abrupt separation from them. She lost a lot of weight from stress and for a while, I thought I'd loose her. It too a lot of feed, supplements and lovin" to get her back to her little soft voiced, southern bell goatie self. She has gained a good bit of weight back and needs another 10lbs or so to fill out a bit more. She is milking just over a half gallon a day, which is good considering she gets way more forage then grain. Her milk is wonderful! Bella is back and that makes me one very happy goatie momma. =D

Time for a "Set a Spell" Update

Hey ya'll! Some of you have sent me email, text messages and even called to see what's been going on around the homestead. In one word...EVERYTHING has been going on simultaneously! Between kidding, hatching, garden and other assorted happenings, I"ve been AWOL with my social calendar.
The following posts are what constitutes the "everything" that has kept me busy and not posting on our blog. You will see a lot of posts with the same date. I am posting snippets so you can read what parts you like and not have to go through an entire document. Enjoy!
